Whole Foods Gift Card Giveaway (Plus a Quinoa Recipe)

Here we are again in Part 3 of our Quinoa series. I hope you saw my previous posts on Quinoa – catch up here and here!

So here’s the newest recipe. The last time I was in Whole Foods their cooking coach, Luke, was talking about this fantastic Tuna Tabouli recipe. There are some important things to note here for those that like healthy food options:

1)      Tuna Tongol – less mercury than regular tuna and better for you

2)      Tuna Tongol can be purchased at Whole Foods in cans near the produce section

3)      You can substitute quinoa for bulgar wheat

Below is the recipe. They were handing this out at Whole Foods in small pita rounds which were delicious. I also think it makes a great lunch or dinner snack – right out of the bowl!  You can also find the original recipe here. I opted to omit the celery.

TunaIngredients1

Tuna Tabouli

Ingredients:

1 cup cooked bulgar wheat (cooked quinoa can be substituted here)

¼ teaspoon salt

½ cup parsley

¼ cup EVOO

2 tablespoons lemon juice

2 stalks celery (optional)

3 green onions, finely chopped

1 7 oz. can Tongol Tuna

Fluff cooked bulgar wheat or quinoa with fork. Add salt, parsley, EVOO, lemon juice, celery, green onions and tuna and toss together. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, then serve.

Notes from the Host: Bulgur is wheat that has been parboiled, dried, and cracked into small pieces. It comes in fine, medium, and course sizes. Bulgur also cooks very quickly requiring only a thirty minute soak in boiling water. It has more protein, fiber and a lower glycemic index than white rice.

The “Steal” Vs. “Splurge” in Hair Care: Zotos Giveaway

I had the privilege to connect with the Communications Manager of Zotos.com, Jodi, and was able to review three different lines of their amazing hair-care products. Usually products like these come with a hefty price tag, but Zotos flawlessly maintains the balance between high-quality ingredients and amazing results, all at a remarkable price. And that’s why these products have made it onto AFrugalChick.com.

The company’s promise is to bring its customers affordable, problem-solving products. They are passionate about making simple and foolproof products that give their customers professional results every day. And, they are easy on the budget!

Below is the complete line of items I reviewed from Zotos.com:

Biotera1

First up were the Biotera Products. These included the Rich Lather Shampoo, Daily Conditioner, Deep Moisturizing Conditioner, and Triple-Action Leave-in Treatment. These are a spin on the traditional BioLage products you find at most salons – and they smell great! I used on my hair before work and by the end of the day, my hair still smelled newly-washed. The products also made my hair feel silky smooth and soft. They are part of the Naturelle Biotera product line of Zotos Professional: Biotera Long & Healthy system, fueled by super fruits such as Pomegranate and Acai berry.  This helps protect against breakage and split ends, as well as strengthens and lengthens hair.

InvisibleDry1

The next product I was really excited about, and it just came to market this month! It’s the Biotera Dry Shampoo, also part of the Naturelle Biotera line. This is the perfect product for those “on-the-go” days when you’re running late to work, headed to the grocery store, or the kids kept you up all night and you just don’t want to be seen in public before washing and drying your hair. While some dry shampoos are powders (and can leave residue), this product is just a spray and can be used on any hair color or style. Spray, style and go!

Age1

Zotos was also kind enough to send some of their Age Beautiful– Anti-Aging Color Preserve System products. This is for all of us who like to color-treat our hair (myself included)! Because these products contain phyto-collagen and keratin peptide protein, they are proven to fight all the signs of aging hair including thinning and dullness. The Age-Beautiful products also help keep your hair looking 50% more vibrant! There are six products in this line to help keep hair beautiful and youthful, including shampoo, conditioner and hairspray.

Addict1

Speaking of hairspray, if you love heat, you’ll love Addict Smoothing & Anti-Frizz Hair Spray. If you blow dry, flat iron, and/or curl your hair, this new collection has damage-blocking formulas to combat the heat. The best part? They have a 72-hour humidity blocker to keep the frizz at bay. Who isn’t it need of a frizz-fighter at times? This product is coming soon – available April 2013. If you check Amazon regularly you may be lucky enough to find one or two for sale before April.

To show you just how excited we are about these products, we’re giving away a prize pack to one lucky reader! They will receive the AGEbeautiful Shampoo, Conditioner and Hairspray for free.

Soda Stream Winner (And The Financial Motivation To Buy)

I am so excited to announce the winner of the Soda Stream Fountain Jet Machine is  Doreen!  Thank you to all who entered!!

I was amazed at how many people commented about the Soda Stream machine and how useful it would be in your daily lives.

I noticed that so many of you drink soda and spend a pretty penny (actually many, many pennies) on your soda purchases each month. Some of you even said you spend up to $5 a day on soda (which could be more for those of you with bigger families).

I wanted to break it down because there are some important points to make that I’ve discovered over the course of the giveaway:

If you spend $5 a day on soda, times 30 days – that is $150 per month. In one year, you are spending close to $2,000 on soda! Because so many of you commented on this topic, I thought it’s important to note the Soda Stream could save the average household thousands of dollars per year, with or without coupons, as the cost of the actual machine averages $100.  Throw in some flavorings and extra bottles, your grand total might be ~$150 max. Although many of you explained it wasn’t part of your budget, over the course of the year, it would actually SAVE you money.

Many of you also loved how the Soda Stream saves waste on bottles, cans, etc. You can use, wash, rinse, and re-use the bottles so your recycling bin isn’t overflowing.  You also aren’t lugging soda to and from the grocery store and having to find room to store the soda in your house.  You can find additional Soda Stream mixes and bottles on Amazon for under $30 and as part of Prime. Perhaps the most important part of the Soda Stream is it is HEALTHIER for you than soda, too!

Just a few fun facts in case any of you are considering a Soda Stream for your household. Thanks again to all who participated and we have lots of fun giveaways currently running and on the horizon.

Also, be sure to sign up for the Zotos Professional hair care giveaway going on now!

Soda Stream Nationwide Giveaway (U.S. Only)- 15,000 Facebook Fans Celebration

So, we know this is a popular item, as we heard a ton of interest over the holidays. And, in celebration of 15,000 fans on Facebook, we have decided to give one away!

The Soda Stream (for those of you who haven’t heard about it) is essentially a beverage carbonating system, so you can turn your average water into a carbonated fruit juice, soda, or other sparkling drink.

The machine comes with a bottle to keep your beverage in (some come with 2 bottles as a bonus as shown in the photo above). There is also a machine stand and “carbonator” – which makes your drinks fizzy. A great benefit is you don’t have to worry about lugging cases of sodas to and from the supermarket, and the Soda Stream is a great value! Just use water from your tap or purification system to fill up the bottle, carbonate, and add a flavor pack to enjoy. It literally only takes a few seconds and the flavors you add are made without high-fructose corn syrup or aspartame.  There are so many different flavors – you can have fun experimenting.  Some of the flavors include: Diet Lemon-Lime, Diet Dr. Pete, Diet Cola, Fountain Mist, Orange, Root Beer, Grapefruit and Diet Cranberry Raspberry, among others. The best part? All the drinks taste like your regular juices and soda – just healthier!

As part of the giveaway, we figured it’d only be fair to try it first before recommending to you. When the Soda Stream arrived, I was so excited to open it. It came in a small box and was easy to put together. They provided us with some extra goodies, as you can see below.

I was confused at first because I didn’t see any batteries or cords, but realized once the “carbonator” bottle is inserted into the machine stand, that’s all you need. So no plugs, cords, or batteries to replace – you can put this anywhere you want in the kitchen! The carbonator is reusable and fills up to 150 bottles.

One of the biggest reasons this item is flying off the shelves is because this item is Earth-Friendly. Because you don’t have tons of bottles or cans from buying sodas and juices at the store, you don’t have to worry about storing in your cabinet or fridge.  You also don’t have to buy multiple different juices to make everyone in the family happy – each person can have their very own beverage without having entire liters of soda or juice go to waste. On the back of the box, the company states that you also save energy wasted by transporting the billions of gallons of soda every day (they have a great promotion video on the homepage of their site as well which demonstrates this idea further).

A huge thank you to Soda Stream, not only for allowing us to try this product but also allowing us to give one away to our dedicated readers.
