Before 2020 I wasn’t a huge wine drinker. And no it wasn’t the pandemic that made me start drinking- it was visits to a winery in Asheville, NC where bored winery employees were able to spend tons of time with me walking me through what I was tasting. I discovered dry wine is of the devil, sweet wines are like dessert in a glass and a generously poured tasting can leave me a little bit tipsy.
Since that time I have found myself enjoying tasting drinks a little bit more whether it’s wine, cider or some other complex taste (think a good peppermint hot chocolate.) My taste buds speak to me more than they did and it has made my life more interesting.
I also discovered I can’t tell the difference between a $15 bottle of wine and a $50 bottle of wine. I either like it or I don’t.
Unfortunately these visits only made me educated in one brand of wine and there is a big wide world of wine out there. Some at mind-boggling prices and with descriptions I’m not even sure I understand. So when Wine Access reached out and asked me to write about their service I agreed to write about it because for someone in my situation this seems perfect.
They will search for wines that fall into the categories I like and avoid the stuff I know I won’t. They tell me the stories behind the wine or producer and ship it next day. Their team is headquartered in Napa, California and includes a Master of Wine, a Master Sommelier, and a selective crew of industry experts who have made in-roads in every major corner of every wine region around the globe. Their personal connections unlock the most exclusive wines, from first growth Bordeaux estates to Napa cult icons and exciting discoveries along the way.
Check out of these descriptions “Medium in depth but vividly ruby-purple in color. Full of aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, kola, fresh herbs, and pie spice. Sumptuous on the palate, with a lavish, silky texture to the tannins, and concentrated black-cherry fruit wearing beautifully integrated oak spices. Drink now–2026.” That’s my kind of wine. Also Robert Redford drank it and we know he had impeccable taste.
