When it comes to the most out-of-control parts of your home, your kids’ rooms are probably the one of the worst. After all, they are probably filled with way too many clothes, books and toys, and kids don’t seem to care nearly as much about kids’ room organization tips as we moms do!
Thankfully, when it comes to the best ways to organize kids’ rooms, you do have a couple options. You could clean your kids’ rooms yourself so you know they are done correctly. Or you could teach your kids to clean their rooms themselves. I like the second option much better.
Whichever method you choose, you owe it to yourself and to your family to make cleaning your kids’ rooms as easy and pain-free as possible. Here are four kids’ room organization tips that will make the cleaning process quick and easy.

1. Use Boxes
If your children have toy sets with lots of small pieces (think: Legoes, Barbies with clothes, art supplies, Play-Doh…) group all of those toys together into clear plastic Rubbermaid shoeboxes with lids (or just label shoeboxes you already have around the house). Then, make a new rule that your child can only play with one box at a time, and that each box must be picked up before the next one can be brought out. With only one set to deal with at a time, clean-up is a snap!
2. Use Bins
For larger toys or toys that don’t come in multiple pieces, use large bins. (Personally, we love cloth bins [4]
3. Label Everything
If your kids are anything like mine, it won’t be long until they have multiple boxes and bins scattered all over the floor. This is why labeling is crucial. With a label on every box and several labels on the shelf, your children can see where their toys go even if they can’t yet read. This way, they can return their toys to their proper places instead of just throwing them on the shelf. This makes finding a particular toy much easier as well.
4. Keep Toys to a Minimum
Honestly, the biggest obstacle to kids’ room organization that most parents have (besides the actual kids) is that their children simply have too much stuff! Combat this issue by going through and getting rid of as many unused toys, outgrown clothes, torn books and old school papers as you can. The fewer items your children have, the less you will have to deal with. If you can’t bring yourself to part with them, at least put half of them in storage and rotate.
