The Best Things in Life are Often Free

I am out at the Grand Canyon right now on a little vacation. As I was looking at this amazing masterpiece I was reminded that so many of the most incredible things we receive do not cost us a thing. I wanted to share a picture I took today.

Such a beautiful view! And while it did cost me to come out to Arizona, the time I got to sit and drink in this beauty cost me nothing.

Enjoy something beautiful for free today!

Happy Birthday Swagbucks!

Swagbucks turns 2 today! If you are new to this website, A Frugal Chick LOVES swagbucks. If you aren’t familiar with Swagbucks check out my post here on the basics!

In celebration of their birthday, they have made a few changes:

1. Their website has a new fresh look. If you haven’t logged on in a while, you should check it out!

2. If you log into your account, you should see a lot more Swag Bucks than you had yesterday. The reason for this is, starting today, all Swag Bucks are multiplied by ten. So if you had 50 Swag Bucks yesterday, you should find 500 today. And instead of awarding 1 or 2 Swag Bucks at a time, you’ll now earn 10 or 20. The cost of the prizes in the store has also been multiplied by 10 so it doesn’t really change much on that front, but it looks more impressive!

3. Download and log into the Swagbucks toolbar, and you’ll be able to earn just by having the toolbar visible in your browser. That always helps me remember to use Swagbucks to search vs another engine.

4. Swagbucks is also being a bit more generous today with points than usual. So make sure you do some searching- there could be some big prizes in it for you!

If you don’t use Swagbucks, today is your day to start! I promise you won’t regret it!

“The Richest Man in Babylon”- Cure #6

I don’t normally write about the finance books that I read, but George S. Clason’s “The Richest Man in Babylon” has some really sound financial principles that I want to pass along. It’s a tiny little book, only 140 pages and since it’s older you should be able to pick it up at your library or on Paperback swap if you want to read it yourself.

“The Richest Man in Babylon” is the story of Arkad, a man who started out as a simple peasant and has now become extremely wealthy. From his castle the king of Babylon sees the poor in his country continue to suffer as they mismanage their resources. He asks Arkad to teach the citizens the secrets to achieving financial security.

The lessons Arkad teaches them he calls the “Seven Cures for a Lean Purse”. While they are not revolutionary, their simplicity makes them very valuable information.

Cure # 6: Insure a Future Income (A Frugal Chick’s Translation: Don’t Plan on Winning the Lottery for Retirement)

Almost 40% of Americans are not saving for retirement. So unless a generous rich uncle passes away or a winning lottery ticket is purchased, rough times could be ahead for many Americans.

Arkad believes in saving for the future. “He (any man) should plan certain investments or provisions that may endure safely for many years, yet will be available when the time arrives which he has so wisely anticipated.” In economic times where some people are barely scraping by, saving for retirement seems impossible. But it is vitally important to begin saving ANYTHING soon. And the younger, the better.

Many companies have a 401k program (or an equivalent) where they will match contributions you make. That’s FREE money regardless of the stock market performance! Try as hard as you can to take advantage of that money- after all, they are just giving it away.

For more info on saving for retirement, check out this post from The Simple Dollar.
