Locals: Pungo Blueberries and Blackberries (Save On Produce)

One of the ways my family saves money on produce is to pick it ourselves. In the Hampton Roads area we have been able to pick strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and peaches.

Last weekend we ventured out to Pungo Blueberries and picked 9 lbs. of blackberries and 4 lbs. of blueberries. At just $1.95 a lb. this is a huge savings for our family. It also makes for some fun family memories too.

There were a lot of blueberries on the vine and by next week they are going to be in abundance. There were also a TON of blackberries on the vine and made picking quick and easy. They tasted much better than any I have ever had from a grocery store. So we decided to stock up.

After picking way more blackberries than I had originally planned, I came home determined not to let any go to waste. So far I have frozen 3 cups, made 2 quarts of blackberry syrup, 1 cobbler, 1 gallon of blackberry lemonade, and canned 8 pints of jam. I still have about 3 cups left for the kiddos to eat throughout the week unless of course I find another recipe to try!

Total blackberry cost was just $18.00 and look how I have been able to preserve the berries so that they will last me throughout the year. A small jar of jam alone would cost at least $3.50 in the store.

If you are looking for ways to save money on produce this is the way to go!

I would recommend calling for picking conditions and hours before heading out there.

Locals: See “The Tempest” For Free This Weekend (Live Theater)

Thanks to Fest Events for the pic!

I am a BIG advocate of live theater.  Besides being a performer myself I feel like my life has been greatly enriched by attending productions.  There is nothing quite like watching a sword fight live or hearing someone sing truly beautiful music.

I particularly enjoy the community theater in my area- the world is full of great performers who also happen to have “normal” jobs during the day.

Last night I had the opportunity to attend an amazing performance for FREE in Norfolk, VA at Town Point Park.  It’s a shortened version of William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”.  Now before you freak out because it’s Shakespeare they have taken the plot and beautifully winnowed it down to a little over an hour.  HUGE portions of it are done by amazing performers in masks- LOTS of physical humor with no talking.

To accompany the production, Festevents is rolling out a Midsummer Fantasy Festival that will open up more than two hours before the start of each performance. Patrons will be able to interact with the puppets and watch fencing contests and dancing. Kids can enjoy games and face-painting. A tavern will serve Elizabethan-style foods and brews in a pub-like atmosphere.  It was VERY fun (I learned to play darts).

I actually have to run out the door to rehearsal but I will write more later.  For those of you who want to check it out here is all the information:

What: Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,” presented by Festevents and Virginia Stage Company, and a Midsummer’s Fantasy Festival

When: Performances at 8:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday, July 26-27, and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 28

Where: Town Point Park, Waterside Drive, downtown Norfolk. (In the event of inclement weather, the performance will be moved inside to the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center adjacent to Nauticus at 1 Waterside Drive.)

Tickets: Reserved box seating, $15 adults, $10 children 12 and older, $3 children under 12; general admission (open picnic and lawn seating), $10 adults, $5 children 12 and older, free to children 12. There will be free general admission between 6 and 7 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 4-5 p.m. Sunday (reserved box prices still apply). After 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and after 5 p.m. Sunday, admission prices apply. Tickets are available online athttp://www.Festevents.org or at the Festevents box office, 120 W. Main Street, Norfolk.
