How To Save Money When You Love To Eat Grapes

How To Save Money When You Love To Eat Grapes

One of the biggest reasons people tell me they don’t use coupons is that they eat too healthy.  While I don’t think that’s a legit argument there are absolutely some ways to save on produce without using coupons.  Keeping the produce you do purchase in good shape longer can be a big money saver.

One of my favorite snacks is grapes so the longer I can make them last the better.  I learned some great information doing research- now I am sharing it with you!

How To Choose Grapes

Search for grapes that are firmly attached to the stems.  Grapes with brown stems that disconnect easily are generally very ripe and will go bad quickly.  Look for brown spots or spots that are too soft and avoid them.

Grapes that have become spoiled may smell strongly of vinegar as a result of fermentation.  Also be sure to look for rot and mold as it can spread quickly through grapes.

How To Clean Grapes

Most grapes that you get at the store are covered in a white waxy surface which helps them hold their shape but affects their taste. This waxy covering is produced by the grapes so it’a healthy to consume but the dirt on the grapes is not.  The covering is GOOD for the grapes but not that great to taste.

The most effective way to clean grapes is to do it right before you eat them.  Remove the portion of grapes you want to eat and put them in a bowl stemless.  Sprinkle 1-2 teaspoons of salt and 1- 2 teaspoons of baking soda on them.  Grab the bowl and shake it vigorously for about thirty seconds then take a look.  Make sure that the only white you see on the grapes is the salt and baking soda!

Then rinse them under cold water and use your hands to remove any leftover residue.  Grapes absorb what’s around them (that’s why they are one of the fruits recommended to get organic) so don’t let the salt or baking soda sit too long or it could affect the taste!

How To Store Grapes (So They Last Longer)

When you get grapes home put them in the fridge right away.  Grapes will stay freshest when stored at temperatures between 30 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Store your grapes at the back of the refrigerator. The space at the back of your refrigerator is often kept cooler.

Store your grapes away from odorous foods.  Grapes have the ability to absorb odors, and may acquire a strange or stale taste if stored near odorous foods.  Your grapes might taste funny stored next to an onion.

Separate stacks of grapes when buying in bulk to promote air circulation.  Keeping crates of grapes stacked on top of one another may cause them to spoil sooner.

Freezing them is my favorite way to snack!  Wash your grapes only if you have plans to freeze them right away. Dry them THOROUGHLY so they won’t stick together in the freezer.  Then you can store them in serving size containers or a nice big bowl for snacking later!
