World Sight Day, Toms Shoes and Autism United

October 11, 2012 is World Sight Day- a time set aside to raise awareness about blindness around the world.

I have horrible eye sight- every morning I stumble for my glasses on my night stand, thankful I live in a country where I have access to things like glasses, contacts and laser eye surgery (on my wish list.)  Over 285 million people world wide live with limited vision.  Two-thirds of these people are women.  80% could live a better life with access to simple things- prescription glasses, medical treatment or simple cataract surgery.

TOMS [1] (the cool shoe people) and Autism United [2] are working together to help people understand how they can help solve the World’s Sight problems.

Blake Mycoskie the founder of TOMS [1] saw this problem and decided to do something about it.  That is why the One For One [3] program was founded. One For One was created to help people who need assistance with vision problems by providing glasses, access to surgery and/or medical treatment.  For every pair of Toms glasses purchased [3] a pair is given to someone in need.

TOMS focuses on 13 countries- Bangladesh, Cambodia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Guatemala, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Paraguay, Tibet, Tanzania, Uganda and the United States.  Working with their sight saving partners they organize screening right in the community to find out who needs help with their vision, and then they work hard to get them the vision help they need. They also partner with groups like Seva that has been implementing sustainable blindness prevention and sight restoration for over thirty years, and has helped over three million people, and other such organizations in order to help more people in need.

If you want to get involved in a simple way- head over and check out the TOMS glasses selection [3].  And because I am a nerd I love the “Virtual Try-On” application.  You can download a picture of yourself or take one with your web cam and try on the glasses virtually.

If you don’t have the money to shop- spread the word!  Let people know that 10/11/12 isn’t just a cool day- it’s World Sight Day!
