The Television Fund

TV will never be a serious competitor for radio because people must sit and keep their eyes glued on a screen; the average American family hasn’t time for it. ~Author Unknown, from New York Times, 1939

My television is the busiest electronic item in my house. It pretty much comes on when I walk in the door and turns off when I go to bed. It provides background noise while I do everything except read. I live alone, so I have sole control of the remote and the content of the shows I watch.

Yesterday I thought my television broke- I tried a few things and couldn’t get it to work. It made me very sad- my parents gave me that television as birthday gift right after I came home from college and it has been great for those 9 years. So I went to the thrift store and bought a tiny television to use for the time being. But when I plugged in the tiny television I got the same error. It was the DVR! Switched out a few cords, rebooted some stuff and my television is good as new!

However it got me thinking that one day either that television or the little one in my bedroom is going to break. And I would like to upgrade to a flatscreen that would take up less room and show off the High Definition that the wonderful network people have tried so hard to bring into my living room. But I don’t want to go broke doing it.

So I am going to try to get my new television at no cost to me. No, I don’t expect someone to give it to me- I want to see if I can earn the money to pay for it on-line (through taking surveys) and through rebates. And since I am not in a hurry to replace my current television (to which I have a sentimental attachment) I can take my time.

So I am inviting you on my television aquiring journey. Every month I will post how I am doing money wise and let you know the sources of my income/gift cards in case you want to take advantage! We will see together how long it takes!
