I am so excited to say that my book “Singles: A Choose Your Own Financial Adventure Book for Those on Their Own” will be coming out in the next few weeks (exact date to come)! The last step I need to do for the actual book is pick a cover!
I am hoping you will help!
Above are the two finalists as picked by my launch team. Can you let me know which one you like the best? Just choose A or B and submit! I would love your feedback!
What Is The Book About?
The book is titled “Singles: A Choose Your Own Financial Adventure Book For Those on Their Own.”
People have asked me for years to write a book. The only thing I would want to write about is finance. Specifically personal finance.
But for the bulk of people, including my readers, that means “couples finance.” And I’m not part of a couple. I have no advice on how to get your husband/wife to go along with you when you are trying to save money. I can’t tell you how to get them involved in using a cash envelope system or talk someone into selling a car whose payment is too much. I can’t talk my cat into doing things- much less a human being.
So I never wrote the book.
But then about a year ago I started talking to my single friends more about money. It was when I was buying a house and seeking advice from those who had done it before on a single income. I discovered most of them had absolutely no handle on their financial situation. If they were in their 40’s they were still digging themselves out of their previous mistakes. If they were in their 30’s they felt everything was hopeless because of low pay, high housing costs and overwhelming student loans. And if they were in their 20’s they had resigned themselves to the fact that they would never be able to own a home.
All of which made me sad.
So I decided to do the thing everyone says not to do and I wrote a book that doesn’t apply to the bulk of my readers. At least on first glance. Most of you are married with kids. But I figured you already have tons of finance books and the rest of us deserve one.
My book is for anyone doing their budget by themselves. The high schooler just getting ready to graduate who is going out on their own for the first time (Mom and Dad this book would make an excellent gift). The 20-something who is in school and doesn’t want to regret the money they are spending. The person at the beginning of their career who wants to start strong by making smart decisions with their 401k and negotiating a starting salary. The single parent who finds themselves divorced and had someone else doing the finances for the last decade.
I do want to say that I don’t think the book would be useless in the hands of a married couple. The chapters on how to cut costs, negotiate current bills, find higher interest savings accounts and fully utilize human resources apply to everyone.

Laura, I am not fond of either title. A choose your own financial adventure should be a picture of a tree lined road that comes to a fork in the road. Which road do you choose? a safe road that is sure to pay out or will you take a risk and take the other road and possibly reap higher rewards. It is up to you.

You will find this goes right along with Dave Ramsey! I have gone through the class and am a big fan. But I had many friends who wouldn’t do it because they weren’t comfortable doing the class with couples (when I went through my entire group was other couples) or they found the book intimidating. That’s part of why I wrote this book!

Consider replacing People On Their Own for Those On Their Own.

I am going to vote for your Option B of your book cover, (and I am a Single who reads and needs to save money) but I think that you should incorporate the dollar sign ($) into your title on Option B.
Stella Reed says
I like the tree better in option B but I liked everything else better in option A.
I can’t wait to read it.

I LOVE the Frugal Chick and am SO glad I discovered you about two years ago! You have already saved me a lot of money.
I am just at the very beginning of my learning how to get spending under control. I have just begun the Dave Ramsey seminars (Week 2) and am just starting to pull together a budget (scary!) and purchased some inexpensive, yet pretty and practical cash spending envelopes to go into my Filofax. Next step: Learn how to use them and stick to it!
Although I am part of a couple, my husband is terminally ill. At some point in the near future, I will not be able to say that anymore. I will be a single mother raising a beautiful teenage daughter on her own — a single woman learning to navigate the world of finances on her own. I hope to learn enough to still allow my daughter and I to live decently, and most importantly, learn enough that I can teach my daughter how to be financially smart, so I can send her out into the world to start her adult life without debt and how to stay stay that way!
Thank you Laura for what you have taught me so far! I cannot wait for your book to come out! Whatever it costs, I will spend the money (out of my misc./fun money envelope of course!) and consider it a smart investment move!!!
With gratitude,
Marie, Yorktown, VA

Wishing you tremendous success with the book and I think it is a fantastic idea for a book and will be a tremendous help to so many!! I fall into the category of who you wrote the book for and I use to joke that I could give frugal a whole new meaning!!!! Best of luck!!!

The title is so clever! I love it!
I do think there should be hyphens in the subtitle “A Choose-Your-Own Financial Adventure.”
Just a suggestion 🙂 Congrats on the book! It sounds awesome!!
