Virginia Beach- LOVE The Moment

As a kid I always thought it was funny people came to my hometown for vacation. Sure we had a beach, an amusement park, a water park, an aquarium, concerts, surfing contests and fireworks but didn’t everyone have that?

As an adult I realize what an exciting area I live in and at the heart of it is Virginia Beach. So much so that many of my friends have had a “Staycation” this year. Instead of leaving town they have chosen to stay here and take advantage of the great things our area has to offer. And as locals we know where all the best adventures are.

Obviously it’s not a stretch to realize the Virginia Beach Oceanfront has a lot to offer. Besides the actual beach itself a few of my favorite activities have been kayaking with the dolphins (they get so close!), para- sailing and a rare party where I got to ride in our local pirate ship hunting for treasure. I am scheduled to check out paddle boarding this summer and can’t wait to give it a shot. There is also a haunted house, 3-D mini golf and street performers during the warm months!

Additionally the Oceanfront is an area for runners. It seems like 9 months of the year there is a race almost every weekend. Some of them are small and some are marathons with thousands of attendees. The energy is always amazing and it’s great to see a city that promotes healthiness as part of it’s climate.

If you want off the boardwalk it doesn’t take too long to get to Ocean Breeze Waterpark. Sometimes you want the fun of slides (they have 10) and wave pools without the salt and sand. They also have a huge area for the little kids where moms can relax and keep an eye out safely. Many locals get season’s passes and go numerous times when the weather is nice. They also have putt-putt golf, a motor speedway and other attractions nearby. When I was a kid we used to throw lunch in a cooler and head to the park. During lunch we could come out, grab our food and eat at one of the nearby picnic tables. Then back into the water for more fun!

When you are ready to get out of the sun check out the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. Located right next door to Ocean Breeze Waterpark they have a giant IMAX theater (Batman in IMAX- AWESOME), boat tours (whale and dolphin watching) and of course aquariums! There is a sting ray tank where you can reach in and touch they as they glide by in the water. Seals, turtles and a touch tank also make for some great pictures and stories.

If you are looking for a more adult vacation you can’t beat Virginia Beach for concerts and festivals- everything from The Wine Festival to The Funny Bones Comedy Club. The food is also incredible- from seafood at Waterman’s to the crab cakes at Surf Rider to the cheesecake at The Jewish Mother there is something for everyone.  The oceanfront is a beautiful venue for concerts and some of the best performers in the country come to sing to the music of the waves.

If you have been mulling over your family vacation for the summer consider coming to Virginia Beach.  If you are local consider staying home this year and really seeing all our area has to offer.  Maybe you can capture a Moment to Love!

I am so happy you posted this. It annoys me whenever people my age (I’m 22) complain about our area and say it’s boring and that they can’t wait to get away from the 757. You described a plethora of fun things to do in Virginia Beach alone, not to mention the rest of Hampton Roads! Busch Gardens and Water Country USA are less than an hour away and then there’s so many neat things to do in Williamsburg and all the other cities close-by. Some people in the country have to travel hours just to see a band or singer they like in concert. Lucky for us though, almost all the performers worth seeing come to either Norfolk or Virginia Beach! Ahh, I just love Hampton Roads. It really doesn’t get much better :)

Love Virginia Beach!! I’m going to miss it this year. We are going to Topsail Island for this year’s vacation. We did the Rudee Flipper Dolphin tour and it was awesome. It was my first beach vacation and it was the best place to go. Have an awesome summer and happy blogging!!
