Save Money On Halloween Candy

In 2013 the average family planned on spending less than $25 on Halloween candy, costumes and decor.  When the dust settled the total spent on average ended up being around $75 (the number varied a bit depending on which article I looked at).

I would say we need to learn how to Save Money On Halloween Candy.  Plus I love extravagant costumes

1.  Don’t Buy Candy You Like– I hate coconut.  I hate nuts.  I can’t chew gum because of problems with my jaw.  You can bet every year I buy Almond Joy and bubble gum to give out for Halloween.  They can sit in my house for months and I won’t touch them.  Figure out what your family doesn’t like and stock up!  Throw it in the freezer to make it even more difficult to eat.

2.  Use Coupons– Coupons are part of the advertising budget for most companies.  So they will release coupons to try to get you to spend your money (which you were already planning on spending) on THEIR product.   The stores will want those coupons because they get reimbursed for them so they will create sales to match the coupons. Match a coupon and a sale at your local store and score some BIG savings.

3.  Shop Early or Very Late-  For those who like to plan ahead some stores will begin their sales early (be sure to see tip #1 if this is you).  This gives you the chance to stock up and have that part of your holiday finished early.  For those who enjoy the rush of last minute shopping many stores mark down their Halloween candy on the 30th or 31st.  If you have the option of waiting until the very last minute you might find some deals (though not much selection).

4.  Skip the High End Candy- When you are giving away candy beggars can’t be choosers.  Don’t grab the chocolate- get the dums- dums or hard candy instead.

5.  Calculate Your Candy Needs– One of the biggest wastes of money every year is buying too much candy.  Before you do your shopping try to estimate your needs.  Check the weather if you are buying closer to the holiday- if it’s going to be raining or extremely cold (depending on your location) you may see less trick-or-treaters.  Also, don’t be afraid to turn the porch light off.  When you run out of candy they will go somewhere else!

6.  Open As You Go-  As a continuation of #5 don’t open the candy all at once.  Many people open all their bags at the beginning of the night, dump the candy in a bowl and at the end of the night have extra.  Open the bags one by one and what you don’t use you can return.

7.  Recycle from your kids bags- if your kids trick or treat early they will bring home bags of candy with them.  Some of which neither you or they will want to eat.  Throw it in the bucket by your front door and hand it out- it could be someone else’s favorite.  (You can send all the lemon heads my way.)
