Why A Frugal Chick Cares About SOPA

I try to keep you guys out of my special “blogger world” and just let you live in the “saving money” world when it comes to my life.  Listening to me complain about “blogging world” is reserved for my friends and family.

However for today I am taking a stand with many others against a new bill that is making it’s way around Washington DC.  If this bill passes internet censorship will change forever and thousands of sites like mine will be in jeopardy of being shut down.

Without getting into the confusing parts this bill (SOPA) poses a huge threat to my way of life.  If this bill is passed basically all anyone has to do is CLAIM that you have copywrited materical on your site and they shut you down without any proof at all. Literally it says all they have to do is write a letter and the companies that you work with have 5 days to pull everything from you.

So let’s say that another blogger posts the same deal I do- maybe they do the Food Lion match ups like I do or they find the same coupon.  They can then send a notice into Google and Paypal letting them know I have stolen their property and I begin a long and complicated battle to continue my livlihood.

And it’s not just going to affect me either- if you have a Flikr account and someone thinks your photo is too close to theirs, the same thing could happen to you.  This is on all internet property- not just those of us making a living online.

So today January 18th many website are going dark (have you tried to get into Wikipedia today? how about google?)- they will not do any work during the day in protest.  I seriously considered doing this.  And honestly if it wasn’t a Wednesday I might have.  However I know many of my readers get their grocery match ups on Wednesday and I am not going to punish your families by taking those deals away.

On the same token as the vote for this bill gets closer and closer I may ask you to drop an e-mail to your local representative and let him or her know that you think it’s a bad idea.  Talks resume in February so for now we will watch and wait.

I am so thankful every day for those of you who read me site and give me love in comments and facebook.  I have the greatest job in the world and anything that threatens it I will fight.

I Just Had Nutella For The First Time

Last night when I got home from seeing Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol there was a tiny box from Amazon on my front porch.  I had not ordered anything for myself so my original thought was it must belong to my neighbor but there was my name neatly typed on the label.

When I opened the box I started laughing- inside was a small jar of Nutella.

People ask me all the time if I know other bloggers and do we get along.  Yes and Yes.  Lots of bloggers know each other and the bulk of us get along pretty well.  Two of my favorite bloggers are Tiffany (My Litter) and Paul Ivanovsky (I Heart The Mart).  I chat with both of them online on an almost daily basis.

Tiffany was astonished to discover a few weeks ago that I had never had Nutella.  For those of you not familiar with Nutella here is how it is described: The combination of roasted hazelnuts, skim milk and cocoa create a deliciously unique creamy, chocolaty taste with a hint of that roasted nut flavor that will delight your taste buds as you enjoy each delicious mouthful.

I’m not really sure why I haven’t- I used to work in a restaurant that sold it- but it had just never crossed my radar.  So she decided for Christmas she would send me a jar.

After I got home from the gym this morning I grabbed a spoon and took out a tiny bit.

I can’t say for sure but I guarantee that is what heaven must taste like.

Fortunately I don’t have too much of a sweet tooth so one spoonful will be enough for now.  But I guarantee you the jar won’t get neglected in the back of the pantry!

Where I Keep My Potato Chips

Have I ever shown you where I keep my potato chips?  They stay in the freezer.

Why?  Because they don’t go stale.

I also have tortilla strips and crackers in my freezer too for the same reason.

If you have problems with these items going stale use your freezer!

Why It’s Good To Read The Price Board

This morning after my workout I decided I would splurge and go to Subway to grab some breakfast.  When I went in to grab my flatbread bacon, egg white and cheese sandwich I looked at the price on the board- $3.50.

Underneath was a big sign that talked about a breakfast combo- you can get a flatbread bacon, egg white and cheese sandwich PLUS a coffee, tea or soda for $3.00.

When I went to check out I looked at the guy and said “Okay am I reading this right?  If I get a drink I save $.50 off what I would pay anyway”?  He turned around and looked at the sign and said “huh, you are right!”  So I saved $.50 and got a drink to go with my breakfast.

Oh and it’s Friday so at my Subway you also get a free cookie!

The moral of the story- be sure to read everything when you go into a restaurant.  Even if it’s your favorite- things may have changed!

I Love My Striiv!

Every once in a while I receive products from companies to try out and let you know what I think.  I have to be honest most of the time they are things I don’t really care about.

However when I was contacted about getting to test out the new Striiv pedometer I waited by the front door for it to arrive (okay not really but I would have).  I have been using it for just over two weeks now and let me tell you how much I love it.

The Striiv is basically a pedometer video game.  It keeps track of how many steps you take every day, how many stairs you climb and how many calories you burn.  It has actually been a huge tool for me in beginning to finally drop some of my extra weight (10 lbs so far!)

I keep it attached to my waist all day and it has hung on great through spin classes, running on the treadmill and walks when it is nice outside.  For the steps that you take you earn points and on the Striiv there is a really cute game building your own land.  The points earn you different objects in the game so you can watch trees grow and build different structures.  This isn’t a complicated game but if I am sitting in line waiting for something I will use my points to plant a few trees!

And if you want to plant trees in real life you can hook the Striiv up to your computer.  By logging your steps online companies donate to various causes- you can choose from clean water, fighting polio and the rainforest.  I have to be honest I haven’t done any of that yet so I am not sure with the details of how that works.  I am just enjoying the pedometer part right now.

Also if I am feeling unmotivated I can have it give me a challenge like “do 50 steps in 1 minute” or “finish up to 250 stairs today.”

For a hard core marathon runner I don’t think this is necessarily the best tool.  But if you are a normal person trying to get in your 10,000 steps a day and be more active this is a fantastic tool.

So check out the Striiv and see if you think it would be a good fit for you or someone in your life.  I can’t tell you how much I have enjoyed it!

I was sent the Striiv to review but my opinions are 100% my own.  I did not receive any payment for this post.
