** Contest: My First Give Away **

Giving a beautifully wrapped gift and meaningful card can make a great impression. It can also get extremely expensive. Between the card, tissue and wrapping paper, gift bags and ribbon you can go broke before you even consider the cost of the gift itself!

Personally I would rather get someone a nice gift and not go broke wrapping it. Those of us who live in Hampton Roads have a little known gem available to help off set this cost.

On Virginia Beach Blvd in the Birchwood Shopping Center there is a store called “the 39er.” I have been going there for almost three years because of their amazing prices on cards, wrapping paper and party supplies!

ALL of the greeting cards in the store are $.39 and include a lot of the same brand names you see in big stores. The roll of wrapping paper I looked at today was $.89 and so was the package of tissue paper. Gift bags (depending on size) usually run in that same price range. They also have packs of invitations for parties or thank you notes- most are right around $1!

In addition they have party supplies. Valentines, St. Patrick’s Day, Mardi Gras, birthdays, poker nights, graduation… just about everything you can think of! They have streamers, tablecloths, cups and napkins available in tons of colors and prints at HUGELY discounted prices- most even cheaper than your local dollar store.

Also, for organizations (teachers, churches etc.) they can order items in large quantities and get them even cheaper! Need to throw a banquet? Check them out to cut way back on your decorating costs! Doing a unit in school with a special theme? You can get everything you need from “the 39er.”

And just to get the ball rolling the owner, Sam, has two great deals for www.afrugalchick.com readers:

1- Print this post and get 10% off your entire purchase (excluding cards) during the month of February! That’s an even better discount on some otherwise expensive items.

2- I get to give away two 50% off coupons! You can go to the store and get 50% off your entire purchase (excluding cards and some party supplies- Sam can let you know when you get there) up to $25.00. So that’s $50.00 worth of stuff! Imagine the possibilities!

If you are interested in winning one of the coupons it’s very simple to enter. Just leave a comment and tell me what you would use it for! I will use a random number generator to select the winning posts on Friday morning, February 19th. Then I will drop you an e-mail for your address and snail mail you the coupon.

Even if you don’t win, make sure to go check them out at 3756 Virginia Beach Blvd in Virginia Beach or give them a call at 757-498-1334!

“The Richest Man in Babylon”- Cure #4

*This is the first post in a 7 part series. If you would like to read the other entries here they are:
Cure #1
Cure #2
Cure #3

I don’t normally write about the finance books that I read, but George S. Clason’s “The Richest Man in Babylon” has some really sound financial principles that I want to pass along. It’s a tiny little book, only 140 pages and since it’s older you should be able to pick it up at your library or on Paperback swap if you want to read it yourself.

“The Richest Man in Babylon” is the story of Arkad, a man who started out as a simple peasant and has now become extremely wealthy. From his castle the king of Babylon sees the poor in his country continue to suffer as they mismanage their resources. He asks Arkad to teach the citizens the secrets to achieving financial security.

The lessons Arkad teaches them he calls the “Seven Cures for a Lean Purse”. While they are not revolutionary, their simplicity makes them very valuable information.

Cure #4: Guard Thy Treasures from Loss (A Frugal Chick’s Translation: Get Intelligent, Trustworthy Help)

Your money is important- don’t let people take it from you. Arkad says his first investment was a complete disaster- he gave his money to a brick maker named Azmur to buy him some jewels to sell. Azmur returned to Arkad with small glass jewels- worthless for reselling. Arkad’s advice? “Better by far to consult the wisdom of those experienced in handling money for profit.” In other words, who expects a brick maker to know about jewels?

The same goes with your money. Talk to your friends who seem to have a good handle on their finances and find out who they have managing their funds. While there is always some risk with investing, a trust worthy financial manager can make sure that your money is handled honestly and with great potential for success!

A Simple First Rite Aid Visit

I know when people first start using coupons, it can seem completely overwhelming. This week Rite Aid has a great, easy deal that is an excellent opportunity to cut your couponing teeth! There are two scenarios- one where you break even and one where you spend a little bit:

First scenario: Go into Rite Aid and grab a container of the Dove Men’s Body Care wash. In front of the proper container there should be a sign that says “$4 Rebate.” When you purchase the body wash it should be $4 plus whatever tax is in your area. Keep your receipt.

When you get home, log on or sign up for Rite Aid’s Single Check Rebate Program. Enter in the relevant information off the receipt and hit submit. This will make your eligible for the $4 rebate. At the end of the month, Rite Aid will mail you a check for $4- meaning you only paid tax for your body wash!

Second scenario: Print this coupon for $1.50 off of Dove for Men Body Wash and Face Wash.

Head to Rite Aid and look for the body wash. There will be a sign in front of it stating it is eligible for a $4 rebate. Grab the appropriate body wash (it should be about $4).

The newest coupon on line also requires that you buy the men’s face wash so check out the price on the face wash. If the cost is reasonable and it is a product the man in your life will use, go ahead and pick it up. Purchase both items, using the $1.50 coupon.

When you get home, log on or sign up for Rite Aid’s Single Check Rebate Program. Enter in the relevant information off the receipt and hit submit. This will make your eligible for the $4 rebate. So whatever the price of the face wash is- minus the $1.50 coupon- is what you pay for BOTH the body wash and the face wash!
