10 Ways To Save Money at Busch Gardens Williamsburg

Ways to Save Money at Busch Gardens Williamsburg

Theme parks can be crazy expensive.  And once you pay to get in the expenses just keep coming- food, drinks, experiences, souvenirs, pictures- it can be insane.  Busch Gardens Williamsburg is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.  The shows and food are fantastic and the rides are very fun.  So when I go I try to get the best deal possible- I don’t want wallet regret after I leave the park!

So from my trips here are Ten Ways To Save Money at Busch Gardens Williamsburg:

Bring Your Own Water Bottle

You can bring your own water bottle into the park.  With bottled water being $2.99 each staying hydrated at the park can be a challenge.  Fill up at the water fountains and drink all day!

Busch Gardens Military Discounts– Waves of Honor or Shop on Base

Busch Gardens Williamsburg participates in the Waves of Honor program.  Active military members can get a free ticket for themselves and their dependents.  Or stop in to your travel office on Base!

Busch Gardens Williamsburg Pre-School Pass– Get your 3 – 5 year old in for FREE!

Before May 31st each year get the FREE Busch Gardens Williamsburg Pre-School Pass good for the entire summer.  If your child is between the ages of three and five just sign up and show proof of age at the park.  Then you get a FREE Fun Pass for the summer!

Buy the Souvenir Cup- And Use It For Years

Each year at the park they have a Souvenir Cup available.  If you buy it filled I believe it’s around $7.  Once you buy it you get refills on soda for $.99 for the rest of the season and Icee refills are $1.29 (my favorite).   But after that season you can bring it back year after year for $1.29 refills.  This is a significant savings over the soda prices in the park.  They also have insulated mugs for hot chocolate and wassail during Christmas Town!

Download the App– Know the park and show times

When you get to the park you want to be sure to maximize what you can get done in that limited time.  One of the best parts about the park are the shows (don’t miss Pet Shenanigans in Ireland)!   When you download the app you have all the show times right in front of you.  Also included are a map, info on all the restaurants, a car finder (so you don’t have to remember), information on the weather and more.  Since you don’t want to spend the day just walking take a few minutes and plot out a course.  The park is a large circle so you can work from one side to the other.

Pre-Buy A Meal Deal On-line– Save on Food Before You Get To The Park

If you do want to eat in the park consider purchasing meals ahead of time.  They actually have a great deal on their site– you get lunch, dinner and the souvenir cup for $30.  That way you don’t overspend at the park.  And most of the meals are big enough you could easily split them!

Strategically Purchase Season Tickets– To Help With Parking Costs

This is the biggest opportunity to save money.  And can get confusing if you don’t understand the tickets.

When it comes down to it these are the two most common season tickets:

Busch Gardens Fun Card$75– Allows you unlimited access to Busch Gardens through September 7th ($15 parking is NOT included)

Busch Gardens 1-Park, One Year– $132 -includes unlimited free parking, in-park discounts on merchandise and food, and Christmas Town Discounts

How to Choose:

Parking is $15 every time you go to the park.  So if your family only plans on attending the park over the summer (not Howl O’Scream- which isn’t great for young kids) a mixture of season tickets and fun passes is the way to go!

A Family of Four Planning 3 Visits or Less: 4 Fun Passes are $300.  Parking will be $15 each time you go to the park.  So if you go to the park 3 times the total cost for entrance would be $345.  More than that see the next scenario.

A Family of Four with Four Visits or More: 3 Fun Passes and 1 Season Ticket is $357.  This would allow you into the park as many visits as you would like with parking included as well as a 10% discount on anything you buy in the park.  No additional money would be needed to get into the park.

Use Busch Gardens Williamsburg Coupons– For Discounts on Single Day Tickets

While discounts are difficult to find on season tickets, coupon codes for single day tickets are all over the place.  I keep an updated list of them here.  If you are only going for one day this is the way to go!

Use the Picnic Area

Picnic areas are available outside the park adjacent to the entrance/exit plaza. It’s not a long walk at all.  So pack a picnic meal, exit the park and have your lunch outside.  They will stamp your hand for re-admittance so you can go back in.

Watch Their Twitter Page

This may seem like a strange suggestion but Busch Gardens uses their twitter feed to communicate their most urgent information. And two of those things could REALLY affect you.  Occasionally the park has to close due to inclement weather (which most likely you would be able to tell before leaving your house).  The other, however, is when the park is at capacity.  I have had friends wait in line outside the park for an hour only to be told they can’t go in.  So just check their twitter feed before you leave- it might save you a trip!

Pixar and Disney’s “Inside Out” Will Turn Your Emotions Inside Out!

inside out

Last week I had the chance to grab a sneak preview of Pixar and Disney’s new animated film “Inside Out.”  I took my five year old nephew and we grabbed our 3D glasses (his first 3D film) excited to check out Pixar’s newest movie.

As usual there was a wonderful short film before the feature.  In this case it’s called “Lava” and kind of sets the tone for the more adult than usual film to follow.  It was fun watching my nephew experiment with his glasses.  He spent the first three minutes flipping them up and down his nose looking at the difference between the 3D glasses and the screen.

This One’s For The Girls (FINALLY)

So first of all I would like to say it’s nice to see Pixar stepping up lately with female leads in their films.  Of the 14 films they have made only two had main characters that were female (the other is Brave).  In this case the entire story centers around the emotions inside the mind of an 11 year old, hockey playing, super fun girl named Riley.  She and her family have a wonderful life in Minnesota and then move to San Francisco for her father’s new job.  The result is a cacophony of feelings never experienced by the emotions in her mind- Joy, Sadness (the BEST character in the film), Anger, Disgust and Fear.  As Riley adjusts to her new life on the outside her emotions adjust to her new life on the inside.  Plus on the edge of becoming a young woman her emotions are much more complex then she is accustomed to.

While there is nothing in this film that will turn off the men (both young and old) in your life it’s just nice to see a young girl getting some screen time.  The guys in the audience were laughing just as much as I was.  And the truth is, growing up is hard and confusing no matter what sex you are.

Yes You Will Cry

I would like to point out that at some time in my life I would like to get through a Pixar movie without crying.  Though it was not the weep fest I experienced sitting alone in my living room watching the first 15 minutes of “Up” the guy next to me in the theatre said he was tempted to go get me some tissue.

I’m not a mom but I love my nieces and nephews the way that only a childless aunt is able.  When I am with them I take great pleasure in giving them as much of my attention as I can knowing that when I leave I can go home and sleep in my quiet house. Watching them grow up is one of the greatest joys in my life (my sis and BIL get alot of credit for them being so amazing).

This movie is a reminder to every adult who watches it how fast that time goes by.  Of that struggle between wanting them to be more independent but also wanting to protect them from the heart ache that comes with age and experience.  There is no experience like loving a child who returns that same love.

This Movie is Made To Experience With Your (Older) Kids

Other than The Incredibles I feel like this Pixar film has a broader appeal than any other I have seen.  (I want to be watching The Incredibles when I am 80).  The story is aimed at a slightly older age of pre-teen and early-teen, but with the same story telling and inside jokes that make the adults in the room enjoy it.

But, like Brave, this is a story you are meant to enjoy WITH your kids.  A shared experience designed to help kids understand adults and adults understand kids.  I don’t think my nephew really understood most of what was going on and in talking to him about it on the drive home I am certain other than basic plot points he missed the finely woven themes and story underneath. Five might be a bit too young for this one.  My friends with 8 and 9 year old kids said the movie lead to some very deep discussion in the car on the way home.  (Be ready to answer the question “what is puberty?”)

sadness

“Inside Out” is a GREAT movie.  But it is very emotional (think how you felt watching “Toy Story”) so be ready for some conversation later once the wheels have stopped churning.  It easily can be added to the list of Pixar Classics and I predict it will end up in many video collections!
