Big Hero 6 opens today (11/7) in theaters!  This week I had the chance to take my nephew to see a sneak preview.  He was SO excited to get his picture taken with Baymax.

Big Hero 6 is a beautiful movie.  Set in the fictional town of San Fransokyo they have created a world where Asian and American culture have merged together.  The cityscape, the robots and the action sequences are amazing.

The main character is a boy named Hiro who graduated from high school at 13 and has become bored with being smart in a normal world.  He utilizes his talents to fight in the underground “bot” fights.  His also intelligent brother tricks him into coming to his lab at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology. That’s where he meets his robot-wielding buddies GoGo Tamago, Wasabi, Honey Lemon, and Fred, a ragtag band of geeky students.  They show how cool it is to be smart and creative (and that girls can be smart too).

His brother has created an amazing robot called Baymax, who is a big puffy bot with a bigger heart. When we first meet him, he’s a very straightforward character, meant to assess and treat medical ailments. But he, like any good character, evolves into a loving, feeling, compassionate friend. Also, he plays the straight man throughout, delivering a bulk of deadpan punchlines- leaving the human characters to provide the rest of the funny lines.

I don’t want to get too much into the plot (no spoilers) but there are fight scenes, touching scenes and funny scenes.  It shows the importance of intelligence, family and heart.

I was concerned about taking my nephew to see it because it is rated PG and he is not five yet so I thought he might miss some of the plot.  While there were obvious things in the relationships between characters he did not understand there was so much else going on it didn’t seem to matter to him.  I looked at him halfway through and asked if he liked it so far. He reluctantly peeled his eyes away from the screen, grinned and said “they are going after the bad guy.”

What more could a little boy want?

I can’t recommend this movie enough.  It has the same spirit as Toy Story and The Incredibles.  It’s beautiful, has amazing music and a wonderful plot (I got teary eyed in a CARTOON). I will absolutely be seeing it again!
