The Review
I hate to ever give Disney a mediocre review but with a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes it appears the critics agree with me. It’s just kind of okay.
That being said if you liked Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland you will probably like Alice Through The Looking Glass. It’s got the same beautiful colors, wonderful music and exaggerated acting. And if someone will buy me a stuffed Chesire Cat to cuddle with I will send you my mailing address.
What’s It About?
My impression from the trailers was that Alice came back to Wonderland because the Mad Hatter was lost. I figured it would be a movie about tracking down a kidnapper.
Nope.
Turns out the Mad Hatter is just fading away because he doesn’t know the true story of what happened to his family. To find out Alice must travel back in time and discover the truth. So she steals the Chronosphere from Time (played by Sasha Cohen- who looks great with blue eyes) to try to go undo the past. Which we all, as adults, know is a BAD idea.
Time begins to fall apart and Alice begins to jeopardize the future by messing with the past. A million people have stolen Carroll’s plot over the last hundred years. And unfortunately there is no real new spin on it this time either.
Who Should See It?
I would say, again, that this movie has earned it’s PG rating. The kids under the age of about 8 at the screening were either bored or confused depending on what was going on. The story is dark and features potentially upsetting themes about death, loss, grief, and dysfunctional family relationships. There are also emotional, distressing moments when characters say goodbye, seemingly forever. And the time travel got to the point where I was frustrated trying to keep up.
The movie is beautiful and fun. If you liked the first, you will like the second. But honestly, if I was dropping $15 to go see something, I would find a theatre near me still playing Jungle Book. If you missed Jungle Book, you NEED to see it.
